Fun Friday Question - What if you and DH won the lottery?

HungryEyes's picture

How would that affect CS for BM and skids? How do you see that situation happening in your life?

We don't even play but I was curious today - if let's say a divorced man and his new wife won 20 million - would his child support be raised? I'm sure most people would pay for private school or however you wanted to better the life your children and skids but in your personal situation - what do you think?

Would you quit your job (Remember it's 20 million) Would DH? Would you quit after the money was in the bank or the day you found out?

It's kind of fun to imagine the what if's... until you start thinking about BM's reaction to it all.

The week DH and I met and started dating - our 4th or 5th date was a lunch date and we both put 5.00 into a 10.00 lottery ticket because it was really high that week. I laughed after we bought it and said 'If that's a winner - I will never hear from you again - you'd take the money and run. And he smiled and handed me the ticket and said 'Okay, you keep it.' That was a huge sign of trust early on and kind of a sweet moment even though we all know the odds...

Yes. This is specifically covered in our state's guidelines for CS, lottery winnings and inheritances get included as income and thus, they would get a portion of it if he won the lottery. That's why he will never win the lottery. I might win it someday }:) (if we played but we don't so none of this matters anyway).

It would absolutely be in my name only, or hell, even one of my brothers if it came to that. I would rather split it with them than give a dime to that wretched harpy or her annoying children.

Yes, this too!

DH and I would much rather split it up with my sister than give one single penny of it to BM.

In Canada, lottery winnings and inheritance are not included in your taxable income. My husband's CS is based on his total income line from his tax return each year. Since his lottery winnings wouldn't be included in that line, Maintenance Enforcement wouldn't know about it. However, I'm sure BM would find out and take him to court and I'm not sure what the outcome would be. If he did win the lottery, I'd claim the winnings myself just to be safe.

We discussed it, DH is an only child, we would have his parents claim the winnings...lottery is considered as income for CS, but inheritance is not. Win Win...lol

DH wouldn't win the lotto, I would. No way that he'd hand over any money to MOTY. Trust funds would be set up. Secondary education would be helped with, but not paid in full. DH and I would never let anyone know. Too many "family" would come out of the woodwork trying to get their share. We'd probably travel more but not buy anything big. We'd stash it somewhere in my name until the skids are of legal age.

Same here. I'm claiming it. No chance BM would get a penny. I'd rather donate it to charity first.

I'm the same way! THE first thing I would pay for is a driver. I HATE to drive. Over a cook, a maid, a pool boy - I want a driver!

I almost bought a monkey once, glad I didn't...
ExH wanted one, I did all the research and then found out the ones he wanted...almost bought one, but after reading the behavior summery...ahhhhh...NO! LOL
If I won the lottery and could hire someone else to care for my monkey and the mess it makes...Yea! I would for sure buy one! lol

Oh! I love that idea!!! A big monkey cage like the zoo!
I'm adding that to my "if I win the lotto" list now too!
lol

I get stressed out just thinking about it because I already know what would happen.

DH is way too giving. So every single one of his aunts, uncles, cousins, cousins cousins, aunts cousins brothers sisters would come out of the woodwork and would want money. DH is way too nice and would want to help everyone. FUCK THAT!

The only way winning the lotto could be a good thing for DH and I was if I got to claim it myself (no CS interference) and I got to control how the money was spent.

I would probably give DH a specific amount of money and tell him to divy it up to his family how he wants and then after that, its done.

i'd be OTFD!!! as would dh. nope, no more working.

we'd pay off the house, vehicle, and all the outstanding bills.

we'd set some aside for future expenses that we'd want the money for - vacations, vehicles for mss and yss, that sort of thing.

we'd invest equal amounts for each kid for some of their future expenses - college, car repairs, security deposit for an apt.

we'd also gift some to family members and people we dearly love and appreciate.

would then probably sell the house and buy a farm, with enough set aside for a few years of care and equipement.

the rest of it would be invested and we'd live off the interest.

We have talked about this...I would claim the money in my name only. I say we get the best Private Detective money can buy as well as the best Lawyer and watch her go down in flames in court, but he says we could just pay her off. I don't think his idea would work. She would just keep coming back for more money.
