He's No Karate Kid

So DH just found out that SS12 wasn't accepted into the black-belt class. DH and BM are just shocked SS12 didn't make it. This is the second time SS12 has failed the black belt class try-outs.

SS12 made a big deal about all of us attending his try-out - DH, BM, BM's SO and me were all there. This is a kid who never practices his karate at home and missed at least one class a week (his class is 2 nights a week).

I knew he wouldn't be accepted. Every time he was asked to do a spin-kick, SS12 almost fell on his arse. He looked like a figure skater doing a spin. He also couldn't finish 2 of the journeys. The journeys are supposed to be memorized. SS12 was looking at other people who were trying out, following them. He's supposed to know the journeys by heart BEFORE he is accepted to black belt class.

He also can't do a push-up to save his soul. SS12 does a weird sort of downward dog yoga pose and then bends his knees and elbows slightly. SS12 looks ridiculous. DH was turning red from embarrassment. The instructor made the group do push-ups twice and the second time he did push-ups with the group and was right next to SS12 -hint, hint. But in our PC society no body has told SS12 that what he's doing is not a push-up.

When SS12 came for visitation on Friday the first thing DH did was try to teach SS12 how to do a push-up the right way. SS12 wouldn't listen and kept doing he's way. DH gave up.

So now SS12 will have to wait another 6-months before he can try out again. I predict he'll drop out before then.

Get your phone out and video tape him doing a 'push up' and then show it to him. Maybe he honestly has no clue what he looks like?

You're correct - SS12 doesn't have the core strength.

DH & I showed SS12 how to do a plank and a pushup. Also showed him a "girl" pushup - knees on the floor w/ankles crossed. SS12 just doesn't want to put the work in. What I mean is DH & I challenged him to see who could do a plank the longest (between the 3 of us). SS12 wouldn't do it.

SS12 also grabs his thighs when he does sit-ups. The instructor ignores it.

I think the karate studio BM has him in is a total waste of time and money.

I agree with the pro tip. That should've been corrected waaaaaay back when.

Good idea! I'll suggest this to DH. Although there are mirrors all over the karate studio so I'm sure SS12 has an idea of how his push-up form looks.

LOL. My SS14 came home from "working out" during his visit with his mom and told us how he runs 8 miles on the treadmill in an hour and how he does about 50 push ups every day. DH told him to show us.

He got down and hands and toes, ass high in the air and started barely dipping himself.

DH had to school the kid and then he could barely do 3.

If it's any consolation, SS15 didn't make it past green belt when he had him enrolled. Too much, you know, effort involved! Heavens no!

SS16 is in the Black Belt Class now. He has been doing this for year. He still looks terrible. I don't get it, I just think they are a money making business and do not effectively teach these kids. He has until December to make the test, or DH is done. He will not be pushing this into the last year of HS. Either he gets it soon, or DH is done paying. Me, I think this should have been called 3 years ago.

I think we are dumbing down these kids, by lowering our expectations of them. I am seeing it in Boy Scouts as well with the Eagle Projects. As a society, we are trying to be so politically correct, we have little expectations on accomplishment.

It is a money making operation. After every class the instructor is like, "bring a friend with you to the next class - show them how great karate is."

BM signed and paid for a 3 year contract - said that it was "guaranteed" that SS12 would be a black belt by then. Well 4 years now and BM has been paying monthly for a year.

SS12's form is terrible. And there are people in his class who must really practice and have awesome form.

Last night DH had SS12 practice the 2 journeys that the instructor said he needed to memorize.

Well SS12 was doing them in the living room I asked him if he had reviewed the journeys and memorized them.

SS12 said, no.

So I asked SS12 how he could perform the whole journey if it wasn't memorized. SS12 just shrugged and kept going.

DH steps in and yells at SS12 to get his tablet and review the journeys then practice them.

SS12 was like okay, whatever.

DH also had SS12 practice doing a plank or should I say a "downward dog" plank. When DH got SS12 into the right position he could only do it for 30 seconds before his arms were shaking. DH told SS12 he needs to work up doing 10 of them a day - holding each for as long as possible.

SS12 just shrugged, walked to the sofa where he proceeded to lay down and turn on Netflix.

Such a waste of time and money.

Definitely sounds like a "McDojo." No real school would guarantee a black belt. That's something that's worked for.

And yeah, it takes a lot of practice. You get out of it what you put into it. My SS15 thought he was just going to show up at class and magically know all the forms. Nope! He actually got kicked out for lack of attendance and consistent failure. Sounds like it's definitely a waste with your SS too.

FLASHBACKS! All three of the skids are "athletic" doncha know (insert massive eyeroll)

LOTS of money only to see skids faking injuries, skipping classes, etc etc to get out of it. I think the management of these sports lessons see BIG MONEY in the parents vicarious egos.

And yes, everything has been dumbed down with expectations so low, a burrowing worm would get caught on the bar.

BettyRay's picture

LOL. I want to  when the parents run up to their kids with water during the breaks. It's like come on these kids aren't professionals and will probably never even make it in a karate competition.

That and the "Rock Star" and "Next American Idol" or "X-Factor" star make me want to puke. OSS (will be 18 next month and no that does not stop CS here in NY) was sent to "CampRocStar" (yes that is the spelling) year after year by the BM. Now she is sending YSS there too.

ZERO talent. My cats have more musical talent when I have accidentally caught their tails in the door.
