O/T I Have a Neurotic Cat Which Leads to Snark Fest

thinkthrice's picture

A 12 year old Bombay who I rescued from a shelter due to incompetent breeders.   He gets nervous at the sight of, well anything.  Any change in routine, any new person who comes to the door, temperature drop in the house, he launches into this nervous running back and forth between his two automatic litterboxes, barfing up any food and pooping in unauthorized places.

He's gone to fancy vets who find nothing physically wrong with him.  I'd like to put him on Ketomine.  Of course Chef, who has little patience with anything--get 'er done type--was saying "well you put up with the behaviour"

Then I mumbled under my breath "I put up with a LOT of things. . ."

He heard me and said: "So do I" (which is a lie--he has it pretty good he just doesn't REALIZE it)

Then I said "You've got to take the good with the bad"

He said: "I remind myself of that every day"

(insert my eyeroll)

<end snarkfest>

He lives in a nice house that "he" built.  Yes he remodeled it but I helped and funded it.  With his CS at the level it is, without my income it would be cardboard box city.   Or moving in with his brother who has nothing to do with us unless he WANTS something.

My income pays all the household expenses.  He does make money but he spends it just as fast as well.

It sounds like Kitty has been through hell and back. Please be patient and hopefully it will realize over time it doesn't need to be scared any longer.

pretty much since '06 when we got him as a kitten.  He would hide in the tiniest of places.  He actually went missing the first 3 weeks we got him.  Diving under the bed and hiding.   To this day he goes into his pooping and barfing frenzy then hides under the bed in the master bedroom and poops/barfs there.  He's a 13 lb kitty cat so hard to hide in small spaces anymore.

I think we're married to the same personality-type.

My DH is also a spender who would be nowhere without me...and is a Get-'Er-Done, zero patience, zero forethought kind of person. Action is better than inaction all day long...no matter the circumstances. He can be really condescending about it, too...like my mom is remodeling her house that we all grew up in...it's an older, 6-bedroom, 3-bath home on some land that she and my dad bought for like, 90K a long time ago, Now it has a lot of issues. DH often jokes about how slow-going it is...and I'm sitting there thinking: "Um...well. Yeah. She's a 60-year old widow who works a full-time job because my dad's illness nearly bankrupted them. Not a 40-something kept husband with a parental piggybank at his disposal..."

You'll be dumping his ass soon anyway!   I've learned that if Chef gives me "advise" in the financial or business department, I do the exact opposite and it turns out for the best!  He's like my personal EIGHT ball!

Check with your vet about anxiety meds for your kitty. There are natural remedies, too (such as valerian), but you should check with your vet before you give them to your furbaby.

For Kitty I would look into a Thunder Vest, they make them for nervous animals, mostly dogs but I believe they have them for cats.  The ketomine really is only a sedative and can't fix psycho kitty issues only rel;ieve them for a short time, the Thunder vest has a calming and securing effect that could be the answer, but then again cats are just messed up from the get go so.....

Please do not give your kitty any medication without consulting with your vet - even a different vet.
At 12, I would suspect that your cat could be prone to kidney issues and Ketomine - and its derivatives - would be contra-indicated.

Who recommended Ketomine as a treatment option for your cat? It is a sedative or pain reliever so won't treat neurosis in cats. Please speak to your vet and do not self-medicate your cat.

Major Blunder is correct. ThunderVests are great in relieving anxiety and stress in animals.I use one for my dog on occassions. Please also speak to your vet about alternate medications,  "natural medications", or alternate drugs for you cat. Behavioural and support therapy is  also an option and should be explored. Please, please speak to a vet - find one you are comfortable with, especially one who speaks to you about your cat's home life and background.

All the natural remedies you can think of and none of them work

Myss is correct about the kidney disease and I will add since this is a "Breed" cat there will always be problems abound, health and psychological, all the inbreeding messes them up pretty bad. I was Veterinary Physically Therapy Tech for almost 10 years and can tell you to find a Vet that specializes in cats, not just your run of the mill vet, cats are very particular and many times require alot more than a dog and one that is a special reed will require even more care.  There are some psychotrpic drugs that might be able to help but like I said seek out a specialist if you want to break kitty of this, or you might be used to it and able to live with it.  At least try the thunder vest might at least take the edge off the little bugger.

topic but how do you like the auto litterboxes? my son is dying to get one for our cat.

litter robots.  They are pricey but I love them.  Just dump the tray when the indicator light flashes!  Add more litter and away you go
