I am such a mean dad and step dad.

Here is what happened:
Someone, one of the 2 Sk's or 2 Bkids left a little mess in our bathroom.
They were all outside playing today and it had rained earlier.
Well we have a standing rule to never use mom and dads bathroom without permission.
Just use the main bathroom.
Everyone had come in for the day and a few hours ago I walk in and found what was left of a toilet paper roll and a few pieces with brown on them. Dont worry we were quite sure it
was just someone cleaned off some dirt/mud. But the trash can is just there under the sink
and the toilet next to it.

So here is my gripe and my honey is right with me on this.
1. Used our bathroom without asking
2. Didnt put the trash where it should be and its RIGHT THERE.
(Trying to teach respect here and responsibility.)

So we ask around and no one wants to admit guilt.
Well no I am pissed. Violation number 3.
3. Lying

Punishment wasn't going to be so bad, just a reprimand and a little chore.

Since no one steps forward we are giving everyone an early bedtime, just just tonight but until
we get the truth. I even told them it will stick from now until the end of time. Wanting to get some peer pressure action going.
A few hours past and still no admission so now I crank it up real high.
Currently 8pm bedtime and no computer/videogame/tv/radio from now until forever until I get an
admission.

The truth is one of the most important things. I am old fashioned and believe a persons word is
the mark of who they are. Better to admit doing something wrong/stupid or on accident and live
with the concequences than suffer greater through lying. The truth always comes out. Karma works.

I think you are an AWESOME parent, no matter who the child is! I commend you on your actions and I think you are right on! I am going to steal this from you in the future, I'm sure. Keep up the good work.

I'm completely with him on this. You should hear the kids talking about this amongst themselves. Honestly, I think Spongebob did it, but he swore to me a little while ago that he did not do it and he would not confess, because he has taken the blame when it wasn't his fault before. So, we're going to let this play out and see what happens.

Yes i agree with everyting. This is a problem for me as well girls cant fing trash can even thow one in every room but living room. MEAN haha hardly

Seriously though, I like the approach you've taken with the whole thing. You'll have to update us when the right kid comes clean:)

This completely cracks me up! You guys are handling this PERFECTLY!! I love the united front with the two of you and you're really teaching them how to work things out amongst themselves. It's clear that there are no favorites or "his" vs "hers" when it comes to your kids. I can't wait to hear what happens.

I think I may have an idea of "whodunnit". It is down to two, but I'll keep it to myself till the guilty party comes clean! LOL!

But you are not mean. If one doesn't confess, they all suffer. It is only fair. That is not being mean. It is being fair.

I revised the punishment today. After everyone came home and completed homework they got a speach about how important it is to be known as trustworthy, that these are the things that make you what you will be as an adult. Boy that cried wolf story and a bunch of other stuff about how I love you and so on.

Anyway, new punishment is that they will sit at the dinningroom table, empty handed and no talking. They will get dinner but they will sit there until bedtime. Sorry, but I just want to force this to an end ASAP. As a kid I went through plenty and with spankings in my day.

We finally got an admission which is good because my patience was going. Wanted to get to the bottom of this.
My lady reminded the kids as they sat there if they wanted to have a private meeting to give information or anything, we are available.
So after a few minutes the girls wanted to talk to us. We told one to leave so we could hear one story at a time to compare the stories for accuracy. As each finished, they were sent to a different room to be isolated. Third in the lineup was youngest of the boys. Then sent to isolation in yet another room.
Finally we called in the accused and not saying anything gave him the chance to tell his story.
"Now I remember, I was just trying to remember what day I did that" Needless to say we weren't happy, first it was a "not again" feeling because of who it was and second because he left the others be punished while he fiddled in his mind.

His punishment and in order to make it up to the others is that for the next 3 weeks he will do all the kids chores and for this week no video games and 8pm bedtime. He took it in good stride as he always seems to making us wonder if he learned anything. Before leaving the room we again
reminded him of our love and the importance of trust and respect.

So ends yet another chapter.

But wait, I'm dying to know. Was it Spongebob like OHG thought it was or was there another culprit in the mix?

Yes, sorry to say it was "Spongebob". He is so lovable and also so damned iritating at times.
Seems like he is always at the center of things.

I think their is always ONE in the bunch that seems to be in the middle of everything... I know my BD6 is the one in my house with the perpetual "guilty expression" on her face. Interestingly enough... she LOVES Spongebob... we call her that from time to time, she acts like him Wink

That is awesome. I remember my parents doing something similar with me and my sisters, over a missing pair of nail clippers. We had to sit on the couch and figure out who had them last... we sat there for 3 hours before my oldest sister confessed that she took them to school to do her nails in class (a nono also) and forgot them in her locker.

We have the same rule about our bathroom, and our bedroom for that matter. They have to ask before entering... PERIOD.

I am impressed with how you handled this. And even more impressed with how well the guilty took the punishment! KUDOS!

I think Spongebob was more relieved than anything. That weight and guilt was finally off of his shoulders.

Funny you should mention nail clippers. I was so tired of one of the 2 pair we have showing up all over the house instead of being put back in the medicine cabinet that last Christmas I bought everyone their own pair as a stocking stuffer. Needless to say no one can find theirs now and back to the same old problem. Well I found a pair sitting around and DAMNIT I just took them. Took them to work and put them in my locker. Now when I need them I know exactly where they are and as I pick them up I look over my shoulder and whisper, "my precious". LOL just kidding about that last part.
Or am I? LOL
